Sadly, at some point in our lives, we will experience a bereavement and the chances are this will happen to us more than once. The emotions that encompass a bereavement can be distressing, complex and conflictual.

Bereavement is a process to help us to accept that with the loss of a loved one, life has changed forever. This doesn’t necessarily mean that life won’t be enjoyable again but certainly it will have taken a different course. It can take time to come to terms with the reality that the person has died and will not return. Denial is often part of the grieving process with belief that the death isn’t real, which can leave us feeling ‘stuck’ and struggling to move through our feelings.

Not everyone experiences the same intensity of distress or feels it in the same way, but it is impossible to lose someone you have been deeply attached to without experiencing some level of pain.

How we lose somebody can impact on our grieving process such as a sudden and traumatic death or our relationship with that person. Maybe we lost a parent in childhood or lost someone we love by suicide. Maybe we lost someone in a tragic accident, a terminal illness, or the loss may be a miscarriage, neo-natal or post-natal death or the death of a young or adult child. There are many distressing ways to lose someone.

Counselling/therapy provides a safe and empathic way to explore your loss, however you experienced it. It allows you to be heard and to work through your feelings, with someone alongside you at such a difficult, challenging, and painful time.

I appreciate that making initial contact can be difficult. After an informal telephone conversation, I would suggest we arrange to meet for an initial session, for us both to assess if we are able and willing to work together.
